VILLAGE OF ELKHART LAKE ELECTION INFORMATION

General Voting Information

The Village of Elkhart Lake has approximately 800 registered voters. Our Village has one ward and one polling place.

All voters in the Village of Elkhart Lake vote at the Grashorn Civic Center, 84 N. Lake St., Elkhart Lake.
Polls open at 7:00am and close at 8:00pm for all elections.

Voter Registration Information

All voters in Wisconsin must register prior to being able to vote. Currently Wisconsin does allow “same-day voter registration,” i.e. registering at the polls on election day, however, registering in advance is recommended as you may not be allowed to vote or may be required to vote a provisional ballot (which requires follow-up information from you prior to being counted) if there are any questions or you are missing any of the information required for your registration.

Voter Registration Requirements

If you are not currently registered to vote, there have been a few changes in the law related to how to register:

• You must be a resident of the municipality for 28 consecutive days.
• You must provide proof of residence at all times. (Please see the list of acceptable documentation for proof of residence.)

• You may no longer use a corroborating witness to verify your residency.
• You must provide the most recent address at which you were previously registered to vote.

In Person Registration
You may register to vote anytime up to the Friday before an election at the Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer’s Office (no registration may take place on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday prior to an election). You will need the following to register:

• Download and complete the Voter Registration Form (PDF, also available from the Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer’s Office)
  Download Adobe Reader
• A Wisconsin Driver’s License or ID, OR if you do not have either one, the last four digits of your social security number. If you have a driver’s license or ID, but just don’t have it along, you may not use your social security number. We are required by state law to collect your driver’s license number.
• Proof of residence.

Mail-In Registration
You may also mail in your registration. To register, you must include a copy of your proof of residence with your application. The State of Wisconsin has a website to assist voters in registering. Please go to the MyVote website to complete your registration form. Please send your completed Voter Registration Form and proof of residence to:

Absentee Voting

If you are unable to come to the polls on Election Day, you may request an absentee ballot. There are two ways to vote absentee, either in-person at the Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer’s Office, or you can request a ballot be mailed to you. You can also use https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/ to request an absentee ballot.

In-person absentee voting is available for the two weeks prior to the election during regular office hours. Please note, due to changes in State law, Absentee Voting is no longer available on the Monday before an election. Please plan accordingly.

If you need an absentee ballot mailed to you, please complete the Absentee Ballot Request Form (this link will take you to a fillable form), print, sign, and return it to the Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer’s Office. Per State law, mailed requests must be received at the Clerk’s office by the Thursday before the election to be processed. A signed, written request is required. We cannot mail out a ballot on a verbal request. Please mail your request to:

Election Worker Responsibilities

Elections workers are responsible for all aspects of the administration of an election. They process same-day voter registrations, verify voter documents, assist voters as needed, process all absentee ballots, and complete all paperwork necessary following the close of the polls. They ensure the integrity of elections, and must have on-going training to keep up on all changes to election law.

Election workers are appointed by the Village Board for two-year terms in odd-numbered years. The Village Administrator/Clerk-Treasurer may appoint additional election workers, if needed, during a term. The Village of Elkhart Lake uses split shifts, so that in most cases, an election worker will not work more than 7-8 hours at a time.
